Summer is my favorite time of the year. Not only being out of school but also all the fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season in the summer. Growing up my mother grew berries and squash as well as every herb you can imagine. My sister and I would spend hours outside and pick all the fresh produce while my mom cooked dinner with it. Since I started college and learned more about the importance of where our food comes from, I started trying to only buy produce that I could trust. Consuming a nutrient dense diet is very important to our health and wellbeing so it’s important to get good quality. The only greens I buy are WPRawl line of Nature’s Greens, which is their line of easy to prepare greens which are already triple washed. This way I don’t have to take any extra time to prepare my greens. I also love that this company is local so I know their produce will be fresh and of the highest quality with no added preservatives. If you know me then you know how much I love the Nature’s Greens kale that I use for smoothies, and lunch/ dinner recipes. This is a great way to add more nutrients, from produce, to my meals. Here are 3 simple tips for how to shop for produce:

1. Purchase only in season produce since it is usually cheaper and tend to have a better flavor

2. Buy produce only in small amounts to prevent any food waste

3. Buy local when possible since produce are of higher quality and will support the local community

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, consuming nutrient dense foods, such as produce, can result in disease prevention and management. These foods provide so many nutrients such as vitamins and minerals that promote good health. Take advantage of the summer season by enjoying what nature has to offer.
